New media, social networking, and software development.
I would like to discuss the evolution, and merger of new media, social networking, and software development. During my presentation I would like to use 2 pieces of software as a demonstration of how developers of the entertainment software incorporate social networking, as well as new media ideas into their products.
I will be discussing these issues on an example of "Steam", by VALVe, a digital content distribution system, as well as "Spore" a game developed by Maxis.
I will discuss how the developers did intentionally incorporate the mentioned issues into their software, for the purpose of creating communities, creative growth, as well as for pure economic reasons.
I will add aditional content to this post later on,
in the mean time feel free to visit the main sites of interest:
Spore
Steam
Here is also a video demonstration of Spore during the TED conference(Jul. 2007)

The presentation was good because of the images and the organization of the project. I have never heard of Spore or Stream in my life, but they sound very interesting!

Derek,
I thought your presentation on social networking and software development was very interesting. I think it's great that the developers are able to share their creations with other people. It is a bit strange that certain game sites allow you to see when your buddies are on and what games they are playing...very stalker-like.

the presentation was very detailed and well showed to us. had alot of different interesting info on these social networks that people use. the different avatars that people used was strange also but it tells a way how people can express themselves and show their interest in these different sites. they are well into virtual reality also with their own worlds.the presentation itself was informative
Hello Derek,
I thought your presentation on social networking and software development was really interesting. It was interesting to see how games, such as Spore, allow users to create their own creatures, as well as the mash-up of the MySpore page, Sporecast, and Sporepedia. Furthermore, it was interesting to learn about how games allow for users to interact with one another, with such features as a buddy list, instant messaging, and so forth.

derek, it's too bad i missed your presentation but i'm sure it was a good one. i've heard quite a lot from you about software development and even that was interesting.

great job Derek!
your always finding the most interesting tech savy things to talk about or already have :-)
I thought it was good to have different mashups for the users to have access to manipulate anytime
you also informed me about spore.com which i didn't know but will be taking a peak at every so often :-)
The presentation is good. It is a good mash up, social networking, and software development. I never heard spore or the definition of Sporepedia. It is good to see how we can choose our character and their objects. I will try this software.
Derek,
I have to say it, you did an excellent job! Although I sort of had an idea about what you were planning on doing, I was very surprised to see a presentation of some new(to me) and familiar software. Spore looks very cool of course.(I wonder if Will Wright is still working at Maxis?) But Steam as you and I both know has made tremendous leaps as of late. Thanks for bringing this info out in such a way where everyone can understand it, with just enough technical info to keep geeks like myself interested which maintaining an easygoing atmosphere which allows everyone to "ooooohh" and "ahhh" whilst looking at the wonderful images you provided. Thanks for a great presentation. I had a great time working with you and the rest of the class this semester!
Hi Derek
Your presentation was excellent as you always showed us your great work and knowledge in every topic you discussed in class. Your presentation was very detailed and educational. With a lot of interesting stuff that I found it really amazing to know. About. It has a lot of Info about all the different social networks and different avatars that people use .one more thing that developers themselves are able to share their thoughts and creativity with others. Keep up the great work and good luck.

The presentation was very interesting since I never heard of the game Spore and the software Steam. So this was informative for me and the graphics were definitely very cool and interesting. Although I never much into these types of games since it seems complicated and strategic. I might get my brother to play it maybe... lol... thanks for always introducting things that I haven't heard of.
